Document #328, Changing the Default Username

Covers all versions of GoldMine

For Workstations that have network connectivity (Windows 2000 Professional/NT/ME/98/95):

For workstations that are connected over a network, the login prompt will automatically default to the network login name. It will not be necessary to change the default name manually unless the GoldMine username is different from the network login account. In those cases, there are three other methods that can be used to change the default username. Please follow the instructions given below for the appropriate operating system that is in use.

For Windows 2000 Professional/NT/ME/98/95 workstations:

1.       Right-click the GoldMine icon on the Desktop and select Properties.

2.       Select the Shortcut Tab

3.       In the Target field, add/u:<username> at the end of the path. For example:

Target: “C:\Program Files\GoldMine\gmw5.exe” /u:JOHN

4.       Click OK to save the changes.

5.       Launch GoldMine, the new username will be prompted as default

Modifying the GM.INI for Windows 95/98 First Edition workstations only:

1.       Open Windows Explorer

2.<       Browse to the GoldMine directory (C:\Program Files\GoldMine) and perform a search for GM.INI file.

3.       Select GM.INI and open the file with Notepad

4.       Add the following line to the [GoldMine] section:

User=<username>

For example: User=JOHN

5.       Save the changes for GM.INI

6.       Launch Goldmine, now the new username will be prompted as default.

Note: This procedure will not work on Windows NT or Windows 2000 workstations, when launching GoldMine; the login banner will automatically default to the user name Administrator. Modifying the GM.INI will have no effect on the user name.

Modifying the AUTOEXEC.BAT for Windows 95/98 First Edition Workstations:

1.       Go to Start menu, then select Run

2.       Type SYSEDIT and select OK

3.       The System Configuration Editor program will open, select the AUTOEXEC.BAT window

4.       Add the following line at the bottom of the file, SET USERNAME=<username>

For example: SET USERNAME=JOHN

5.       Select File>>Save then select File>>Exit to close the window.

6.       Exit all open applications and restart Windows for the changes to take effect.

7.       Launch GoldMine, now the new username will be prompted as the default.
